Learn The Moves!

The Jazzercise program has many advantages over other aerobic- and dance-based fitness classes. One of those is "Exercise Science!" Jazzercise has an exercise physiologist look at all of our movements and choreography so, when the movement is done correctly, YOU get maximum benefit (e.g. calorie burning, muscle strengthening) from the Jazzercise program!

Our Movement of the Week is the Heel Hop. The Heel Hop can be done both with a hop (high impact) or without a hop (low impact) - whichever feels best for you! Review the attached video first and then practice along!

Notice how she pulls her knee up before placing the heel gently on the floor? The quadriceps muscle works to life the knee and then the hamstring and glute pull the leg to the floor to touch the heel down.

FIT TIP: The quadriceps (front of upper leg), hamstring (back of upper leg), and glute (your backside) are all MAJOR MUSCLES. When we use these major muscles, we burn more calories than our bodies would using smaller muscles (e.g. arms).

Also notice the position of her arms. She brings one arm directly to her side (no higher than her shoulder) and the other arm comes directly forward. When you lift or pump your arms, you increase the intensity of the movement. Increase intensity means your heart is beating more rapidly and you are burning more calories.

So next time you are in class, add a little oompf to your Heel Hop using your Major Muscles and lifting your arms. You'll burn more calories and sleep better!
